NYACK — Recent water main breaks, boil-water advisories, and ongoing infrastructure concerns have renewed public discussion about water quality in Nyack and South Nyack.
According to the Village of Nyack’s latest annual drinking water report, the system continues to meet most state and federal drinking water standards, though officials acknowledged one contaminant exceeded a New York State standard during testing and said corrective work is underway. The report also notes that the village is pursuing upgrades tied to PFAS treatment and aging infrastructure.
At the same time, residents have increasingly voiced concerns about repeated disruptions to service, temporary discoloration, odor, and the condition of aging water mains.
During the May 2026 South Nyack water main breaks, residents interviewed by local media described periods without water service and uncertainty over repairs. Others expressed concern over boil-water advisories affecting families and children.
The Village of Nyack has also acknowledged that hydrant flushing, pipe repairs, and pressure changes can cause temporary discoloration in the water supply. Village notices stated that sediment, iron deposits, and minerals inside older mains may become disturbed during repairs or maintenance work, sometimes leading to brown, yellow, or cloudy water.
Officials said flushing operations are intended to help remove sediment buildup and improve overall water quality. Residents have been advised to run cold water until discoloration clears and to avoid using heavily discolored water for laundry.
Public discussion online and on social media has included complaints about:
rusty or cloudy water
unusual taste or odor
recurring boil-water advisories
pressure loss during repairs
concerns over aging infrastructure
Some residents have also raised questions about long-term infrastructure planning and funding, particularly after multiple major water main breaks over the past several years.
State environmental records show Nyack has been working on PFAS-related treatment upgrades connected to PFOA and PFOS detections in portions of the water system. Village officials have maintained that the water supply is tested regularly and that improvement projects are ongoing.
The Village of Nyack Water Department continues to post testing reports and updates through its official website
