Take Steps to Prevent HIV: Learn About PrEP

The RCDOH Recognizes PrEP Aware Week, October 19-25

NEW CITY, NY, – The Rockland County Department of Health (RCDOH) recognizes PrEP Aware Week, October 19 – 25 and encourages residents to learn how pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), can help prevent HIV. This year’s theme, “Peace. Power. PrEP”, highlights PrEP as a safe and effective way to greatly lower the risk of HIV infection. Learning about PrEP and knowing your prevention options can help you take control of your health and protect yourself and your community.

PrEP is a prescription medication that helps prevent HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) before a person is exposed to the virus. It is available as a daily pill or an injectable medication. PrEP is for HIV-negative adults and teenagers who may be exposed to HIV through sex or injection drug use. When taken as directed, PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV by as much as 99%.

PrEP can also help protect pregnant individuals and their babies before and during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Talk with your healthcare provider to learn if PrEP is right for you and which option best meets your needs.

PrEP is available at the Rockland County Department of Health’s Sexual Health Clinic. The clinic is open by appointment only on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. To make an appointment, call (845) 364-3771 or complete the appointment request form.

Residents can also visit the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute Provider Directory to find other providers offering PrEP in Rockland County. Many local health care providers offer PrEP, so ask about it during your next visit.

New York State offers the PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP-AP) to help people access PrEP care and services. Medicaid and most health insurance plans cover PrEP without co-pays or other out-of-pocket costs.

“PrEP is a highly effective tool that empowers individuals to protect themselves from HIV and make informed decisions about their sexual health,” said Rockland County Commissioner of Health Dr. Mary Leahy. “During PrEP Aware Week, we encourage all Rockland County residents to explore what PrEP is, speak with a health care provider, and consider whether it may be an appropriate choice for them. Understanding your options and taking proactive steps to prevent HIV can help safeguard both your health and your future.”
