Statement on Supreme Court TPS Ruling

Supreme Court Ruling Allows End To TPS For Haitians And Syrians

Rockland County Legislators: Regardless Of View On Immigration Policy, We Should All Recognize The Human Impact This Decision Will Have On Families

New City, NY (June 25, 2026) – Rockland County Legislators said they were disappointed by today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians and Syrians who have legally lived and worked in the United States for years – a ruling that only creates uncertainty and anxiety among people already facing tremendous struggles.

This decision has particular significance in Rockland County, home to one of the largest Haitian communities in the nation. Haitian families are our neighbors, coworkers, business owners, health care professionals, educators, and friends. They have made lasting contributions to our communities and to the strength of our county.

“Rockland’s Haitian community is woven into the fabric of our county,” Rockland County Legislature Chairman Jay Hood Jr. said. “Regardless of where someone stands on immigration policy, we should all recognize the human impact this decision will have on families who have lived and contributed here for years. We hope our federal leaders will work toward a solution that is both lawful and compassionate.”

Rockland County Legislator Toney Earl, whose district includes many members of the Haitian community, said the ending of TPS would be “morally wrong.”

“Haiti continues to suffer extreme gang warfare, kidnappings, sexual violence against women and children, food shortages, a lack of medical care, and so much more. It is morally wrong to require people to return to a Haiti that still has not been made safe,” Legislator Earl said.

He noted that conditions are so bad, the most current U.S. State Department Haiti Travel Advisory says, “Do not travel to Haiti due to kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, civil unrest, and limited health care.”

The Rockland County Legislature has backed the continuation of TPS for Haitians and others, including most recently in March 2025, with a unanimous vote calling for an extension.

The Rockland County Legislature stands with our Haitian and Syrian neighbors and encourages federal leaders to pursue a fair, humane, and lasting solution that reflects both the rule of law and the dignity of those who have built their lives in our communities.
