Nanuet, NY – State Senator Bill Weber (R-38), the son and brother of retired and active NYPD officers, denounced a plan hatched and pushed by Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson and some of her Democrat colleagues to turn Rockland into a so-called “Sanctuary County” for illegal immigrants.

Senator Weber also challenged his Democrat opponent, Joe Rand, to publicly disavow the move or publicly explain why he supports it.

“Does Joe Rand have the courage to publicly disavow this insane proposal to make Rockland a Sanctuary County, or will he stand with his radical progressive allies in the Rockland County Legislature and put Rockland County residents at risk?” asked Senator Weber.  “The public has a right to know where he stands.”

The New York Post broke the news today that the Democrat-run Rockland County legislature is set to introduce an Immigration Protection Actto limit or bar county law enforcement and other workers from cooperating with federal immigration officials.

County Executive Ed Day, a Republican, said Democrats forwarded a copy of a law using the same name that was approved by the legislature in neighboring Westchester County in 2018.

According to Rockland County Executive Ed Day – who said he will veto the measure – the proposed law being pushed by Rand’s radical progressive allies in the Legislature would:

• Bar county employees and law enforcement from proactively cooperating with ICE, unless it involves a criminal investigation or criminal activity.

• Bar honoring immigration detainers — absent a judicial warrant — or providing notification of the release of illegal migrants.

• Prohibit telling immigration authorities an individual’s immigration status

Senator Weber added: “Let me be crystal clear, I oppose Rockland County becoming a Sanctuary County and will do everything in my power to raise awareness of and opposition to this radical proposal.  Rockland County is not New York City; it is not San Francisco; and it is not Minneapolis. This kind of radical left-wing pandering has no place in our community.”
