TRAFFIC Route 59 stretch in Spring Valley to close through late spring, summer Portrait of Nancy Cutler Rockland/Westchester Journal News Updated March 30, 2026, 1:54 p.m.

SPRING VALLEY – A stretch of Route 59 that crosses over South Pascack Road will be closed starting around May 21 and lasting at least through the summer.  All traffic, including a large number of pedestrians who traverse this corridor, will be detoured around that stretch of 59 throughout the construction.

The bridge that carries 59 over Pascack Road needs to be brought up to modern design standards. The work includes increasing the bridge’s load-bearing capacity and improving road lane and sidewalk widths, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.

Route 59 Bridge Closure in Spring Valley Set for Late May Through Summer

SPRING VALLEY — Drivers and pedestrians who rely on Route 59 should prepare for a major disruption beginning later this spring.

A stretch of Route 59 over South Pascack Road is scheduled to close around May 21, with the shutdown expected to last through the summer months, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.

The closure will affect all traffic, including the many pedestrians who regularly pass through this busy corridor. Detours will be in place during the construction period.

State officials say the project focuses on upgrading the bridge to meet modern safety and design standards. Planned improvements include:

Increasing the bridge’s load-bearing capacity

Widening traffic lanes

Improving sidewalk space for pedestrian safety

This section of Route 59 is one of the most heavily traveled routes in Rockland County, so delays and heavier traffic on nearby roads are expected.

Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time once construction begins.

More updates on detour routes and timelines are expected as the start date approaches.
