Rockland’s Rescued Animals Need Your Help: Shelter Updates and Donation Drive

ROCKLAND POST DESK

Coming soon — spring is just around the corner, but Rockland County’s rescued animals are feeling the chill, and local shelters are asking for the community’s help. Following years of changes, the county’s animal care system is now run by Rockland Green, with Four Legs Good NY/NJ assisting in day-to-day operations.

The former Hi‑Tor Animal Shelter, once the county’s main shelter, no longer operates the facility. A long legal dispute over the contract ended in late 2025 with a settlement. Hi‑Tor continues as a nonprofit caring for animals independently, while Rockland Green manages the main shelter and is planning a new, modern facility in Haverstraw.

Even with these transitions, resources remain tight. Shelter staff say blankets, towels, and bedding are in short supply, leaving many pets without proper warmth and comfort.

One of the shelter’s recent rescues, a shy but playful cat named Mochi, spent the first weeks shivering in a small kennel before volunteers could provide extra blankets. Meanwhile, Buddy, a senior Labrador mix, has been curling up on donated towels to stay warm during colder nights. Shelter workers say stories like Mochi’s and Buddy’s are common — and that donations directly improve the lives of animals like them.

Items Most Needed:

A spokesperson for Four Legs Good says, “Even small donations make a huge difference. Each blanket or towel keeps an animal warm, safe, and a little happier while they wait for adoption. Our resources are limited, and the community’s generosity directly impacts the well-being of these animals.”

Rockland’s shelters rely heavily on volunteers and donations. With a new shelter facility underway, helping now ensures animals have a comfortable place to stay during this transition. Community members are encouraged to check their closets for gently used or new blankets, towels, and bedding. Every contribution provides warmth, comfort, and a safe environment while animals wait for their forever homes.

Whether it’s a cozy blanket for Mochi or a soft towel for Buddy, your donation today makes a real difference for Rockland’s rescued animals.
