RLUIPA lawsuit in Clarkstown. SV road closure looms: Rockland Angle

By Nancy Cutler,

RLUIPA: This week, we take a look at a tense topic in ever-growing Rockland. A New City rabbi is suing the town of Clarkstown and key boards after his variance application was rejected by the Zoning Board of Appeals. The federal lawsuit cites the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, known by the moniker RLUIPA. The suit also takes aim at a town law that restricts where houses of worship can locate. Read our coverage here.

Road closure reminder: This Wednesday, June 3, is now the date for the planned complete closure of Route 59 in Spring Valley. The byway in that stretch west of New Clarkstown Road is needed to repair the bridge that crosses over South Pascack Road. (Expect sporadic traffic halts on South Pascack Road too.) Get the details here.

Stony Point and USA 250: As the semiquincentennial approaches, our Peter Carr spent some time with Revolutionary War re-enactors at the Stony Point Battlefield. Check out his story, with stunning pictures, here.

Gun buyback: Spring Valley PD, the Rockland County Sheriff and New York State Police are hosting a gun buyback event from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, June 4 at St. Joseph’s Church, 245 Main St., Spring Valley. People get paid in gift cards; no ID, no questions asked for the anonymous relinquishment, according to the sheriff’s office. Guns should be transported unloaded, in the trunk of vehicles.
