Haverstraw police are investigating reports that individuals were viewing sexually explicit material on public computers at the King’s Daughters Public Library, according to officials.
The inquiry follows video and images submitted to another media outlet that appear to show adult content being accessed on library computers located in open, high-traffic areas. Some of the computer stations are positioned in plain view of other patrons, including near sections frequented by children.
A witness told the outlet she encountered similar activity while visiting the library Thursday morning.
“I just walked out and on the screen was a website with a woman who was shirtless,” the witness told another media outlet and added “It was really uncomfortable.”
Police responded to the library shortly after the incident was reported. Haverstraw Police Chief John Gould said the department is aware of the situation and plans to meet with library officials to review current policies and procedures.
In a statement, a library spokesperson emphasized that patrons who violate internet use guidelines are addressed promptly.
“Any patron on a public computer found to be violating our internet use policy is immediately notified of the non-compliance and removed from computer access,” the statement read.
The incident has raised concerns among some visitors about the visibility of computer screens in shared public spaces and whether additional safeguards may be needed.
The investigation remains ongoing.
