Peekskill, NY – A video that surfaced last week showing a Peekskill police officer repeatedly striking and tasing a man during an arrest at Riverfront Green Park has sparked concern in the community. The incident occurred on December 3 and involved 42‑year‑old Damar Fields, who family members say has serious mental health issues.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, shows the officer kicking and punching Fields while he is on the ground, prompting questions about the use of force. Following the release of the footage, the officer was placed on paid administrative leave, and the case has been referred to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office. The city’s Civilian Complaint Review Board is also reviewing the incident.
The Peekskill Police Benevolent Association, the local officers’ union, defended the officer, stating he had their “unequivocal support.” The union said the suspect was resisting arrest and behaving irrationally at the time, and that the officer acted in accordance with department policy.
City officials acknowledged the video raises serious questions and pledged a full review. Meanwhile, local advocates and residents have called for accountability and emphasized the importance of humane treatment for people with mental health challenges.
Fields’ family is seeking legal counsel, and protests and further public discussions are expected as the investigation continues.
Community Response
Residents are weighing in on social media, some expressing shock and concern, while others echo the union’s statement about resisting behavior. Local civil‑rights groups stress that incidents like this highlight the need for better training and community engagement.
The investigation is ongoing, and updates are expected in the coming weeks.
