Olive’s: A Bedrock of Nyack’s Arts and Music Scene

For over 45 years, Olive’s has stood at the heart of Nyack’s cultural life, uniting artists, musicians, and community members. Owned and guided by Marianne Olive, it remains the village’s longest-standing bar, celebrated for its live music, creative energy, and support of original performances.

A Vision Born of Woodstock

Marianne’s journey toward creating Olive’s was shaped early on by her teenage experience at Woodstock in 1969, where she discovered the power of performance and community through music. That experience inspired her lifelong dedication to bringing people together through creativity and shared experience.

Growing up as one of eleven children in the Marycrest neighborhood of West Nyack, Marianne learned the values of self-reliance and hard work. Her early years took her across the country, where she studied art in California, piloted small planes, and traveled through Europe in a van—earning her way by drawing portraits, cutting hair, and making crafts.

When she returned to New York, she earned her cosmetology license and opened a full-service salon in Nyack, living above her business. When the opportunity came to buy the building and the neighboring property, she took it—transforming the two spaces into a restaurant, bar, and live music venue in 1979. Originally called One Potato Two Potato, it eventually became known simply as Olive’s.

A Haven for Creativity

Olives quickly became a vital part of Nyack’s arts and music community, reminiscent of iconic downtown clubs like CBGB’S and Max’s Kansas City from New York City’s past. Over the years, it has been a launchpad for countless musicians, including Coheed and Cambria, who performed there before gaining national attention.

The venue remains known for its mix of music—from bluegrass to hard rock—and for spotlighting local acts such as Frankie D and the Boyz and Misfits Karaoke. Its open, multigenerational atmosphere continues to make it a place where both longtime regulars and first-time visitors feel at home.

Olives recently expanded its offerings to include a full kitchen, giving guests a chance to enjoy food along with live music. The menu features casual favorites and late-night bites, adding to the venue’s appeal as an all-around community gathering place.

Looking Ahead

Marianne continues to see Olive’s as more than a nightlife spot—it’s a space where creativity, performance, and friendship intersect. Plans include adding live streaming for performances to reach broader audiences while keeping the local, personal atmosphere that defines the venue.

The adjoining space also hosts private events, pop-ups, and community gatherings, strengthening Olive’s role as a local hub. For Marianne, Olive’s remains a labor of love and a lasting symbol of music, inclusion, and Nyack’s creative spirit.
