New Employment Law Starts In April In New York State

Starting on April 18, 2026, a new employment law will go into effect, and it could make it easier for people to land a job.

The new law will prevent possible employers from using credit scores and credit history as part of the hiring process. Companies will not be able to deny someone employment just based on credit scores and/or history.

There are some exceptions to the new law. These include police officers, people who have a high clearance level when it comes to trade and insider information, and anyone who has a financial management role where they are in charge of a portfolio worth over $10,000.
