A Nativity scene on display in Hezekiah Easter Square in Nyack was damaged just days before Christmas, after the protective case surrounding the display was vandalized.

According to the Orangetown Police Department, an officer discovered the damage during a routine patrol on Monday, December 22. The incident is being investigated as criminal mischief, and no arrests have been announced.
The Nativity scene, which is installed each holiday season by members of the Knights of Columbus and the Parish of St. Paul & St. Ann’s, was repaired later in the week and remained on display through Christmas.
“This display is meant to bring people together and reflect peace during the holiday season,” said Ed Tangredi, a member of the Knights of Columbus. “It’s disappointing to see something like this happen, but we’re grateful it was fixed quickly.”
Nyack Mayor Joe Rand called the damage “an inexcusable act of cowardice” while praising the community’s support for the holiday display.
The incident comes amid broader concerns nationwide about vandalism and damage to religious sites. Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Orangetown Police Department.
