NYACK — Music has always been more than entertainment — it can heal, connect, and help people grow. That belief is at the heart of Music for Life Creative Arts Therapy, a nonprofit in Nyack that uses music and the arts to support people of all ages and abilities. Founded more than a decade ago by board‑certified music therapist Jeffrey Friedberg, Music for Life has become a local beacon for creativity, healing, and community.
Friedberg, a NY State licensed creative arts therapist with more than 30 years of experience, started Music for Life in 2013 to bring therapeutic music and art programs to children, adults, and seniors. His work grew from one location into multiple venues, including sessions at the center in Nyack and outreach programs at nearby sites like the Antrim Playhouse in Tappan.
At its core, Music for Life focuses on music therapy — a structured, evidence‑based practice used worldwide to support emotional wellbeing, improve communication and motor skills, reduce stress, and strengthen confidence. Modern music therapy grew in the mid‑20th century when musicians and caregivers began using music to help veterans and others heal after World War II. Over time, it became an accepted clinical discipline with training and certification.
Programs Tailored to Individual Goals
At Music for Life, every participant begins with an assessment to set personal goals in areas such as social connection, communication, coordination, or emotional expression. Sessions range from individual music therapy and piano lessons to group bands, songwriting workshops, musical theater classes, and live performance opportunities. Therapists work with people who have autism, developmental delays, Alzheimer’s or dementia, anxiety, depression, and a variety of other conditions.
One staff music therapist noted that a simple milestone — like keeping a steady tempo — could reflect major gains in motor skills, focus, and confidence. The programs are tailored to what each person needs, helping them grow as individuals and artists.
Parents and caregivers often speak of the difference Music for Life makes beyond music itself. Several have said the sessions build community, strengthen friendships, and give participants a sense of belonging that carries into everyday life.
More Than a Class — A Community
Music for Life hosts events that celebrate participants’ progress and invite the public to enjoy their talent. Variety shows are scheduled where performers of all ages and abilities take the stage in joyful music and the community.
Programs have also included film screenings, musicals, and band performances — like The Rock ‘n’ Rollers, a group that has played throughout Rockland County — giving participants a chance to shine and audiences a chance to cheer them on.
Healing Through Music, Every Day
Friedberg’s philosophy is simple: music enriches lives. By using the arts as a tool for growth and connection, Music for Life helps people express themselves, build confidence, and feel supported. The organization encourages residents to attend performances, volunteer, or donate to help keep programs accessible for everyone.
