| NEW YORK, NY — Republican candidate for New York Attorney General Saritha Komatireddy tonight laid out her vision for a fundamentally different Attorney General’s Office during the statewide Spectrum News debate, drawing a clear contrast with incumbent Attorney General Letitia James on public safety, mental illness and homelessness, fraud, corruption and the proper role of the office. “Tonight, New Yorkers saw the difference between a prosecutor with a plan for the future and an Attorney General defending eight years of failure,” said Isabelle Daigle, Campaign Manager for Saritha. “Letitia James has had eight years, a massive budget and the full power of the Attorney General’s Office. Yet New Yorkers are still confronting serious concerns about crime, homelessness, untreated mental illness, repeat offenders and fraud. Instead of taking responsibility, James has spent far too much of her tenure focused on national politics while these problems grew at home. Komatireddy showed tonight what New York has been missing: a prosecutor who understands that the Attorney General’s job is to protect New Yorkers. She laid out a clear agenda to go after repeat offenders, confront the mental health and homelessness crisis, prosecute fraud and corruption, and put public safety back at the center of the office. Letitia James asked New Yorkers for another four years. Tonight, Saritha made the case that eight years of the same record is enough. It is time to turn the page.” Throughout the debate, Komatireddy drew on her experience as a former federal prosecutor and former Chief of Staff at the Drug Enforcement Administration while outlining the priorities she would pursue as Attorney General. Komatireddy has proposed creating an Office of Civil Commitment and expanding access to residential psychiatric treatment as part of her plan to address severe mental illness and homelessness. She has also proposed a more aggressive approach to repeat offenders and violent crime, including using the Attorney General’s criminal enforcement authorities and working with local law enforcement. Komatireddy also outlined her plans to combat Medicaid fraud, investigate corruption and fraud involving taxpayer dollars, and refocus the Attorney General’s Office on public safety and accountability. “Tonight’s debate made the contrast in this race unmistakable,” Isabelle said. “Letitia James defended the last eight years. Saritha Komatireddy laid out a plan for a safer New York. It’s time for a change.” |
