Job Description
This is a complex administrative and technical position responsible for directing a public library and providing library services. The work involves establishing procedures and delegating duties and responsibilities to carry out policies determined by the Library Board of Trustees. Generally, the size and staffing of the library will necessitate participation in professional and technical library functions. Supervision is exercised over library personnel.
The work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Board of Trustees.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master’s degree or higher in Library Science, Library and Information Science or comparable degree from a library school located within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department, or from a library school program accredited by the American Library Association and four (4) years of paid professional library work experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a public library in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
Possession of a valid New York State Librarian’s Professional Certificate.
Other Requirements and Information:
- Possession of a current New York State Public Librarian’s professional certificate at the time of application. Applicant must meet the job requirement to be appointed by civil service as Library Director I, held by the Rockland County Department.
- Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position as part of the NY HELPS Local program. Candidates must only meet the minimum qualifications for consideration.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary and benefits are competitive with the public sector market including but not limited to the following:
- $72,000-$80,000 Annual Salary, depending on experience (as of 11/03/2026)
- 40 Hour work week
- Time off including vacation, sick and holiday time
