Job Description
The Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library welcomes qualified candidates to apply for the position of Librarian II (full-time, 35 hours per week).
This is work of a specialized nature involving responsibility for one or more professional phases of library work including public service and circulation. The incumbent will act as department head. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director or Assistant Director and supervision is exercised over professional and nonprofessional employees. Does related work as required.
Haverstraw King’s Daughters Public Library supports a vibrant community of 39,000 people with collections and programming at two locations in Garnerville and the Village of Haverstraw, New York. We are certified as a Sustainable Library under the Sustainable Libraries Initiative.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
- Administers library policies as they relate to library materials, staff and patrons;
- Supervises and evaluates the work of subordinate professional and/or clerical staff;
- Performs staff training;
- Assists library patrons;
- Researches, plans, recommends and implements changes in and new types of services based on patron needs;
- Performs varied or specialized library work requiring considerable knowledge and application of library science and experience in collection development including acquisition, evaluation and selection, discarding, weeding and withdrawal of library materials;
- Represents the library at community and group meetings and in the development of community contacts;
- Keeps informed of professional developments, library trends and technology through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses and reading professional materials.
SKILLS
- Ability to exhibit tact, courtesy and good customer service in dealing with staff and patrons;
- Ability to serve a diverse population and exhibit cultural sensitivity;
- Thorough knowledge of current principles, practices, technology and trends in libraries;
- Thorough knowledge of database systems and the application of computer technology to library operations;
- Ability to train, supervise and evaluate subordinate staff members;
- Ability to function as a team member in the planning and implementation of library projects;
- Good oral and written communication skills with individuals and groups of varying age, education and experience levels;
- Ability to think critically, understand and articulate the needs of library patrons and groups;
- Ability to display initiative when dealing with the library’s mission, goals and plan of service;
- Ability to carry out assignments independently;
- Thorough knowledge of bibliographical tools and sources;
- Thorough knowledge of library materials and collection;
- Good knowledge of current library organizations, procedures, policies, aims, initiatives and services.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Possession of a graduate library degree from a library school located within New York State which is registered by the State Education Department, or from a library school program which is accredited by the American Library Association and two (2) years of professional library experience;
- Possession of a valid New York State Librarian’s Professional Certificate;
- Appointee must be a legal resident of New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut.
Other Requirements and Information:
- Ability to work an assigned schedule
- Physically capable of bending, lifting, reaching and pushing loaded book carts
- May be assigned at Village Branch in Haverstraw or Main Library in Garnerville
- Residency in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut is a requirement for this position.
- Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position as part of the NY HELPS Local program. Candidates must only meet the minimum qualifications for consideration.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary and benefits are competitive with the public sector market including but not limited to the following:
- Salary $75,966 to $96,951 (as of 7/21/26)
- 35 hours per week
- Participation in medical, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, NYPFL
- New York State Pension eligibility
