The Rockland County BOCES is seeking a candidate to work in their fast-paced educational environment. The work is specialized, diverse, and can be complex in nature. This position involves technical work in the field of occupational therapy, including responsibility for implementing treatment plans designed by Occupational Therapists to improve or restore functional abilities in individuals with physical, developmental, emotional, or cognitive impairments.
The work is performed under the general supervision of a Senior Occupational Therapist or other higher-level administrator.
Job Description:
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves technical work in the field of occupational therapy. It involves responsibility for implementing treatment plans designed by Occupational Therapists to improve or restore functional abilities in individuals with physical, developmental, emotional or cognitive impairments. The work requires proficiency in applying therapeutic techniques and exercising limited independent judgment in adapting activities within established guidelines to meet individual needs. Supervision is received from a Senior Occupational Therapist or other higher-level administrator. Does related work as required.
Implements individualized treatment plans developed by an Occupational Therapist; Monitors and documents patient/student progress to substantiate continued need for therapeutic services; Conducts periodic reviews of therapeutic goals and collaborates with the supervising therapist to recommend adjustments based on observed outcomes; Facilitates training in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) for patients in healthcare settings or students in educational programs, promoting functional independence; Maintains accurate and timely documentation of therapy sessions in patient medical records or student IEPs (Individualized Education Plan); Ensures the therapy environment is clean, organized and compliant with safety standards. Monitors and replenishes inventory of therapeutic supplies and equipment; Assists the Occupational Therapist in evaluating, designing and modifying adaptive equipment to meet individual needs; Educates patients, students and caregivers on the safe and proper use of adaptive devices and equipment; Promotes awareness of safety protocols and injury prevention strategies during therapeutic activities; Attends professional development workshops, conferences and seminars and shares relevant updates with the care or education team; May participate in in-service training programs to enhance clinical competencies and stay current with best practices; May administer appropriate annual evaluations, functional assessment tests and screenings.
Good knowledge of occupational therapy principles, practices and techniques; working knowledge of therapeutic equipment and adaptive devices; ability to observe, document and report individual progress results; ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain successful relationships with others.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Possession of a valid license issued or recognized by the New York State Education Department to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant and certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT); or
2. Possession of a limited permit issued by the New York State Education Department to practice as an Occupational Therapy Assistant and certification as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
3. Possession of a valid driver’s license or accessibility to transportation when fieldwork is required. The appointing authority shall have the responsibility for the verification of a driver’s license which may be checked throughout the course of employment in this title.

- Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position as part of the NY HELPS Local program. Candidates must only meet the minimum qualifications for consideration.
