Job Description
The Rockland County Department of Health, Center for Environmental Health, is currently seeking an Assistant Public Health Engineer to perform entry-level professional engineering work of a responsible nature involving the promotion of public health practices and the enforcement of public health laws in the operation of one or more of the specialized phases of the environmental health programs (e.g. air pollution, water pollution, sewage, industrial waste).
Candidates must possess good knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of public health engineering and environmental health; working knowledge of local and state public health engineering and environmental health laws and sanitary codes*; the ability to apply the principles of environmental engineering in the resolution of routine public health issues; the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; the ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with others, including public officials; and the ability to interpret moderately complex written material.
The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level engineering professional.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and either one year of professional level experience in public health engineering, environmental health, or related (e.g. public health hazardous waste program, public health hazardous materials management and/or response, air or water pollution control).
- A Master’s or Doctorate degree in Engineering or Environmental Science may be substituted for the one year of required experience.
- A Professional Engineering license may be substituted for the specialized Bachelor’s degree.
TRAINEE: Candidates without one year of professional experience, including those graduating in Spring, 2026, are encouraged to apply as an Assistant Public Health Engineer (Trainee).

Civil service examination requirements have been waived for this position as part of the NY HELPS Local program. Candidates must only meet the minimum qualifications for consideration.
