On Saturday, December 6, 2025, the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center hosted the Peter Aquilone Winter Classic, bringing together Special Olympics athletes from across New York State for a day of floorball competition and community celebration.
The tournament featured four divisions of four teams each, organized by ability level. Teams represented regions across the state, including Hudson Valley, Long Island, New York City, and surrounding areas. Our team competed in Division 3.

Clarkstown Vikings/Hudson Valley lost to the 993Q Tigers by a score of 5-1 & Defeated the Genesee Rockets by a score of 6-0 to claim the bronze medal. “We needed to step up on defense to control the flow of the game and support our offense attack,” said defender Andrew R. of Hudson Valley and goalie Trevor E., reflecting on the teamwork that helped secure the win.
The team was guided by Head Coach Al Becarreli, with Assistant Coaches Robert Cooper and Ross Klein supporting players throughout the day.

Floorball, an indoor sport played with lightweight sticks and a plastic ball, has become a popular and inclusive alternative to traditional floor hockey in the Special Olympics program. The Winter Classic also offered health screenings and wellness activities for athletes, coaches, and volunteers.

The Javits Center provided a large, central arena for the daylong festivities, giving athletes the experience of competing on a professional-level stage. For many participants, the Winter Classic was more than just a competition — it was a chance to connect with peers, showcase their abilities, and celebrate teamwork and determination.
