On August 5, 2026, troopers assigned to State Police Troop T, SP Tarrytown and Troop F Bureau of Criminal Investigation arrested Kellin Patrick Sweeney, 30, of Wilmington, DE on felony weapons charges and driving while intoxicated.
Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on August 5, troopers from SP Tarrytown observed a 2015 Toyota Camry traveling northbound in the town of Orangetown on the New York State Thruway (I-87) in violation of vehicle and traffic laws and conducted a traffic stop. During the investigation, troopers located a loaded .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun with a 15 round magazine in the vehicle. The driver, identified as Sweeney, was taken into custody and transported to SP Tarrytown for processing. At the station he registered a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08%.
Sweeney was charged with the following:
- Criminal possession of a weapon, 2nd degree (felony)
- Criminal possession of a weapon, 3rd degree- ammunition feeding device (felony)
- Criminal possession of a firearm (felony)
- Operate motor vehicle with .08 of 1% Alcohol Or More In Blood- 1st offense
- Driving while intoxicated- 1st offense
Sweeney was remanded to the Rockland County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail, $15,000 bond or $30,000 partially secured bond. He is due to appear in Orangetown Court on August 11.
The New York State Police remind travelers that firearm laws vary from state to state. Anyone entering or traveling through New York is responsible for knowing and complying with New York State law. A firearm that may be lawfully possessed or carried in another state may not necessarily be lawful in New York.
