County Executive’s Corner: Saluting Our Heroes

By County Executive Ed Day

Memorial Day is one of the most solemn and meaningful observances in our nation. It is a day to honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

The origins of Memorial Day date back to the years following the Civil War, the deadliest conflict in American history. Communities across the nation began decorating the graves of fallen soldiers and gathering in prayer and remembrance. More than 150 years later, that tradition continues as Americans pause to reflect on the extraordinary sacrifices made to preserve the freedoms we enjoy every day.

As the father of a service member and a former law enforcement officer, I understand the commitment and courage required to wear a uniform in service to others. Today, fewer than one percent of Americans serve in the military, and the number of living veterans continues to decline. For many, military service is something they may never witness firsthand or personally experience through a loved one.

That makes it even more important that we, as a nation, never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Their bravery secured the liberties we cherish, and their legacy lives on in the values of duty, honor, and selfless service.

We honor our fallen not only through remembrance, but also by supporting the veterans who returned home. Ensuring they have access to quality health care, employment opportunities, and the benefits they earned is one of the most meaningful ways we can express our gratitude.

Here in Rockland County, our Veterans Service Agency (VSA) is dedicated to assisting veterans and their families with navigating the often-complex process of obtaining and maintaining benefits. Whether it is filing claims, accessing health care, or finding employment resources, our experienced staff works tirelessly to ensure those who served receive the support they deserve.

Last year alone, the VSA helped secure more than $1.1 million in benefits for Rockland County veterans and their families, in addition to doubling the size of its Veteran Food Pantry, serving 242 veterans & surviving spouses.

We will never stop advocating for the heroes who defend our nation and will never forget those who wrote a blank check to the United States of America for an amount up to and including their lives.

This Memorial Day, I encourage all residents to take a moment to reflect, remember, and honor the men and women who gave everything for our country.

To all who served, and to the families who continue to carry the memory of their loved ones, we offer our deepest gratitude.

Veterans in need of assistance with benefits, employment, or other services are encouraged to contact the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency at 845-638-5244.
