Clarkstown Advances Affordable Housing Plans for Former Grace Baptist Church Site in Nanuet

The Town of Clarkstown is moving ahead with plans to redevelop the former Grace Baptist Church property in Nanuet, with the site expected to be used for affordable housing and related community purposes.

Town officials say the location — close to downtown, public transportation, and essential services — makes it well suited for housing that serves residents who want to live locally without long commutes.

Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said the town’s recent actions are focused on keeping options open while ensuring the property is used for a public benefit.

“There is no final plan for the property,” Hoehmann said previously when discussing the site. “We simply transferred a portion of the land because it made the most sense.”

Town leaders have emphasized that the move allows Clarkstown to guide future development in a way that reflects community needs, rather than leaving the site subject to uncertain private proposals.

The project comes as affordable housing continues to be a major local and national issue, affecting seniors on fixed incomes, young adults trying to remain in their hometowns, and working residents employed in education, healthcare, public safety, and retail.

Officials have noted that housing affordability is increasingly tied to school stability, workforce retention, and downtown vitality. Without a range of housing options, communities risk losing residents who support local businesses, volunteer organizations, and municipal services.

The Grace Baptist Church property has drawn attention in the past following a failed private sale and legal disputes. By acquiring the site, Clarkstown officials say they are better positioned to ensure its future use aligns with broader planning goals.

While specific design details and timelines have not yet been finalized, town officials say public input will be part of the process as plans continue to take shape.

More information is expected to be released as the project moves through planning and review stages.
