BRICK IT AGAIN: BUILDING COMMUNITY ONE LEGO AT A TIME

BY: Robert Jowaiszas, Community Editor

When Brick It Again opened in March 2023 at Lake Ridge Plaza in Valley Cottage, it became more than a LEGO® resale shop—it grew into a welcoming space for creativity, inclusion, and community. Operated by the nonprofit Jowonio, the store was launched to expand vocational opportunities for adults with disabilities, mental health challenges, and chronic conditions, offering meaningful work in a supportive environment.

Jowonio, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2022, created Brick It Again during a time of limited government funding. The project reflected the organization’s ongoing effort to find new, sustainable ways to continue its mission of helping people live, work, and thrive as independently as possible.

“From the start, we wanted a place where everyone could contribute and feel valued,” said CEO Randi Rios-Castro from a previous interview. “Brick It Again gives individuals opportunities to develop independence while engaging with the community.”

🧩 LEGO®: Learning, Social Skills, and Independence

LEGO® bricks have long been more than toys—they’re valuable tools for learning. LEGO® Therapy, created in the mid-1990s by pediatric neuropsychologist Dr. Daniel LeGoff, uses structured LEGO® play to help children, especially those on the autism spectrum, build social and communication skills. By taking on roles like “Engineer,” “Supplier,” and “Builder,” participants learn teamwork, problem-solving, and turn-taking.
Those same principles now guide Brick It Again’s adult vocational program. Employees develop job skills such as managing inventory, handling registers, and assisting customers—all while gaining confidence and independence.

“It’s amazing to see our team grow while doing something fun,” said Store Manager Andrew Perr. “They’re building more than LEGO® sets—they’re building pride and self-reliance.”

🌟 Growth, Volunteers, and Community Support

Since opening, Brick It Again has grown into a lively and supportive part of the community. The store now employs 11 adults and welcomes about two dozen volunteers. Five local agencies send groups regularly, and high school students often join to gain hands-on experience.

LEGO® donations from community drives and private collectors have helped keep the shelves full and the atmosphere creative. “We even have a few serious collectors who’ve donated rare and retired sets,” Perr said. “They’ve helped us keep our inventory interesting and unique.”

During the pandemic, LEGO® sales saw a major resurgence as families rediscovered the joy of building together. That same renewed enthusiasm helped Brick It Again flourish, with strong community interest, growing sales, and steady donations.

“We’re more than halfway self-sufficient now, and we’re still growing from grants.” Perr said. “Sales are increasing, donations are strong and that helps us reach more people. We’ve also joined local street fairs, summer camps, and community events—everyone wants to be part of it.
