| NEW YORK – Today, New York State Attorney General Candidate Saritha Komatireddy issued the following statement on an ex-con out on parole pushing a 70-year-old woman onto the subway tracks: “New Yorkers are sick and tired of hearing the same story over and over again: a violent repeat offender commits a crime, is released back onto our streets, ignores the justice system, and then goes on to hurt someone else. It never ends. This time, it resulted in a 70-year-old woman being pushed onto the subway tracks. The suspect had 14 prior arrests, was on parole, was in and out of a homeless shelter, had recently been arrested for burglary, was released despite re-offending while on parole, failed to appear in court, and had an active bench warrant out for his arrest. It is the latest example of a system that has failed at every level, resulting in violence and victimization that was entirely preventable. Letitia James has pursued policies that prioritize criminals over victims and excuses over accountability. The result is that New Yorkers are now forced to wonder whether they will make it home safely after stepping onto a subway platform. That is unacceptable. It is time for an Attorney General who will work with law enforcement to ensure repeat violent offenders are prosecuted to the fullest extent, fix the broken bail laws, and restore a justice system that puts public safety first. Compassion and accountability are not mutually exclusive, and allowing dangerous individuals to cycle endlessly through arrests, release, and re-offending is neither compassionate nor just. New Yorkers deserve a justice system that protects innocent people.” |
