| Rochester Police Officer Nicole Amatore was named 2026 Police Officer of the Year by the Governor for running towards gunfire and disabling a gunman who had already wounded three of her colleagues. She has been under investigation by the Attorney General‘s office for more than 10 months. While the Attorney General must investigate all police-involved shootings, those investigations should be conducted in a manner that is timely and transparent. Everyone involved — the police officers, the victims of crime, the offender’s family, and the public — deserves an answer and deserves to have confidence in the process. The police should be held accountable, but the Attorney General should be held accountable too. On Day One as Attorney General, I will immediately initiate a review of all investigations that have been pending for more than six months, and going forward all investigations will report their conclusion or provide an update and reason why they are not yet concluded 60 days after initiation. After completing an investigation, the Attorney General‘s office will either clear the officer or take action, making a firm statement that the use of force was justified or not justified. In criminal court, we extend criminal defendants the basic courtesy of telling them at the end of their case whether they are guilty or not guilty. We should extend our police officers the same basic courtesy. |
