250 Years of Freedom: A Fourth of July Message

By County Executive Ed Day

This year’s Independence Day carries special meaning as our nation prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

As we approach this historic milestone, the County of Rockland put together an incredible four-part Rev250 series that dives into Rockland County’s  Revolutionary War history.

From one of the greatest acts of treason in U.S. History to the Storming of Stony Point, the events in our own backyards unfolded like a spy novel and I applaud our Economic Development & Tourism Department for putting together this incredible snapshot of our history.

Catch the four-part series on the Rockland County Youtube Channel at www.youtube.com/@RocklandGov.

The Fourth of July marks the moment our founders boldly proclaimed a new nation, setting in motion a story of courage, sacrifice, and resilience.

As we honor 250 years of American independence, we are reminded that these ideals endure because countless patriots have stood ready to defend them.

Our service members—past and present—continue that proud legacy. As a military dad, I remain profoundly moved by the dedication of those who raise their right hand, accept the risks of service, and protect our freedoms at home and abroad. Many serve today in dangerous and demanding environments, carrying forward the same spirit that defined our nation’s earliest days.

But for too many who return home, particularly our older veterans, the challenges of navigating the VA system can feel overwhelming. In Rockland County, we are committed to making sure no veteran faces those challenges alone.

Our Veterans Service Agency (VSA) continues to provide critical support to the more than 9,000 veterans who call Rockland home.

The VSA offers benefit counseling, claim preparation and follow‑up, assistance with appeals, employment resources, and guidance on navigating the VA healthcare system—including which Urgent and Community Care providers are available. These services help ensure veterans receive the care and support they have earned.

As we commemorate this Independence Day—and look ahead to America’s 250th anniversary—let us renew our commitment to those who have safeguarded our freedoms for nearly two and a half centuries.

If you or someone you know is a veteran in need of assistance, please reach out. Visit RocklandCountyNY.gov or call 845‑638‑5244 to connect with our Veterans Service Agency.

May God bless you, and may God bless the United States of America.
